National Unity Day

Today is National Unity Day in Zimbabwe, three days after Robert Mugabe's declaration that "Zimbabwe is mine" and that no nation would dare topple him. I am increasingly disturbed by the state of the nations in Africa. More and more there are stories of untold genocides still be discovered, bodies being unearthed, children dying from AIDS, war, famine, and disease.

I remember when I was six I was in the van with my father and we were listening to NPR and there was a report of the atrocities that were happening in Bosnia during the war in 1992. I can remember the look on his face when the reporter stated that women were being held, raped and forced to drink their own urine by Serb forces. IT was a dark face; it wasn't necessarily anger, but more of what I think was a battle face. A face that said "we cannot stand idly by, SOMETHING must be done." That is how I feel every time I hear a report coming out of Africa. Something must be done.

I don't have the answers or the solutions - I'm not sure there is an answer other than Jesus Christ. While He is the hope for the future, for those nations and all people, we His hands and His feet must do something now. We talk and place sanctions, but there must be more we can do. We must pray and pray earnestly for peace; we must give what we are able to give (money, time, etc) in order to be His presence in the world. That is something we can never forget.

In remembrance is redemption.

You know you've been watching too much Angel when...

You have a dream where you are being chased by bad guys through Hollywood and you run into (literally) David Boreanaz while he is jogging and you both bust into these martial arts ninja moves and knock all the bad guys out in a pile.

oh yeah... and the dream keeps going from there.

Conversation then ensues with the lovely David Boreanaz and he invites you and your husband over to dinner with the family and Joss Whedon. Yeah, that's right, Joss Whedon. After a night of witty conversation and food (yes, I did eat in my dream, I don't think it actually matters if you do or not) Joss offers you a job as a script writer on his new show.

There was a lot more to the dream, like making up bedtime stories for David's son with Joss (about a mousy princess named Bella and her arrant knight Chicki - short for Chickiantixouz - and their many adventures) and a funny conversation in which I have to explain to Ryan over the phone who exactly David Boreanaz is and then convince him not to do a google image search which would result in him finding TONS of pictures of said actor naked in a tub.

When I woke up my thoughts went something like this "mmmm... being a script writer for Joss would be the best job in the world" and then "I've been watching waaaay too much Buffy and Angel if I just had a dream like that".

Said the Brain to the Heart

In the midst of my migraine induced pain, part of a poem came to me. I am not a very good poet - in fact I would say I am a horrible poet, but for some reason this needed to be written down - it's not very good, and it's not complete, but I didn't want to forget what was given to me. It feels like it starts in the middle of the poem, but I didn't know how to get there, only how to go a few lines forward.

"shhh" said the brain to the heart, "the Lamb can heal all wounds"
"who is this Lamb" cried the heart, "that he can sooth my wounded soul?"
"Is he a physician who can stitch together my broken pieces?"
"He is the Great Physician who will make you whole"
the brain said gently to the heart
"But I don't understand," the heart said, confused
"is he a Lamb or a physician?"
The brain laughed softly, "he is both"
"How can he be both?" the heart asked, astonished
imagining a lamb with a knife and needle
"He is the Great I Am who made thee,
and it is He who has the power to make you new"
The heart pondered this for a few moments before asking
"You have given me the Lamb, the Physician and the I Am;
how can there be three but yet one?"

Let me know what you think...
